4 checks$23,187.861 void

Compare these totals with your QuickBooks report.

  1. Line 1. One check per line, every line exactly 160 characters, with each field at a fixed position: issue/void code, account number, check number, amount, issue date and payee.

  2. Line 2. A payee name with a comma is sent without the comma. The notes below say why.

  3. Line 3. A voided check, marked V, with its original amount. QuickBooks shows voids as $0.00, so BankFileKit asks you for the original amount.

How to send it to First Citizens

  1. In Commercial Advantage, go to Fraud / Risk Management, open Check Issue Management and select Import Check Issue/Void File.
  2. Choose First Citizens' standard Fixed Field format, then browse to the file you downloaded from BankFileKit.
  3. For your first file, check Load the file in test mode. First Citizens validates it without adding the checks, so you can confirm the file is accepted.
  4. Select File Import. Then open Imported Files, view the file to review its checks, and approve it. Only approved files go to the bank.

Good to know

  • This is First Citizens' preferred Fixed Field layout: every line is 160 characters, with each field at a set position.
  • Every line carries your First Citizens account number, up to 12 digits. Type it on the tool page. You can have it remembered on this computer, encrypted with a passphrase.
  • Payee names can be up to 80 characters and are compared with the name printed on the check. First Citizens asks for payee names without commas, so BankFileKit leaves commas out.
  • A voided check is sent with V in the first position and its original amount.

Where First Citizens's guide doesn't say

BankFileKit fills these in with safe defaults. Your test file confirms them with First Citizens before you send a live file.

  • BankFileKit default: Filler positions 2-3 and 36-40 are zeros, as in First Citizens' example, and 151-160 are spaces. The guide allows either.
  • BankFileKit default: The optional memo field (positions 49-70) is left blank.
  • BankFileKit default: File extension .txt. The guide doesn't name one for Fixed Field files.
  • BankFileKit default: Text: plain ASCII. The guide doesn't list allowed characters.
  • BankFileKit default: A payee name longer than 80 characters is an error, not shortened, so the file always matches the printed check.

Note: Send a test file to First Citizens first

Before your first live file, download the free test file with your first 3 checks, send it to First Citizens, and confirm it was accepted. BankFileKit can't guarantee that First Citizens will accept a file.
