3 checks$10,687.861 void

Compare these totals with your QuickBooks report.

  1. Line 1. One check per line, every line exactly 79 characters, with each field at a fixed position: account number, check number, issue date, amount, payee, issue/void code and void date.

  2. Line 3. A voided check, marked V, sent with $0.00.

Check 1005 from the sample is left out of this example: its payee name is longer than the 30 characters First American Bank allows. With your own file, BankFileKit shows how to fix a name like that.

How to send it to First American Bank

  1. First American Bank's layout is fixed, so there's nothing to map. Ask First American Bank how to send your Positive Pay file, and send the free test file from BankFileKit first.
  2. Use the layout without a header (Option 1 in First American's guide). Each file is for one account.
  3. Make pay or return decisions on suspect checks in First American's Ca$hTrac system.

Where First American Bank's guide doesn't say

BankFileKit fills these in with safe defaults. Your test file confirms them with First American Bank before you send a live file.

  • BankFileKit default: The void date is the date BankFileKit makes the file (decided 10/29/2026). QuickBooks doesn't record the date a check was voided.
  • BankFileKit default: The optional debit code at position 70 is left blank. First American's guide says new issues are always debits.
  • BankFileKit default: Account number and payee use the bank's own rules: zero-filled to 11 digits, and payee names up to 30 characters (longer names are an error, not shortened).
  • BankFileKit default: Line endings: Windows (CRLF). Text: plain ASCII. First American's guide asks for plain text with no blank lines.

Note: Send a test file to First American Bank first

Before your first live file, download the free test file with your first 3 checks, send it to First American Bank, and confirm it was accepted. BankFileKit can't guarantee that First American Bank will accept a file.
